'Maizing Grace- Grow A Row Project
For the fourth year Salem has a growing project for the Foods Resource Bank (FRB). The Foods Resource Bank provides funding for sustainable agricultural projects around the world to provide families the dignity and security of raising their own food. Local Growing Projects in the U.S. are the way money is raised for FRB - successful agriculture supporting developing agriculture. Visit www.foodsresourcebank.org for more information about overseas agricultural projects.
Twenty-five acres of soybeans were planted across from the youth baseball fields by the Lewis Central administrative offices. Pioneer donated the soybean seed, Bob Adkins and Sons donated the planting equipment and labor, Agriland Insurance donated the federal crop insurance premium, and Thien Farm Management, Inc. provided management and marketing. Other costs included rent of the land, fertilizer, harvest equipment and labor, and trucking the beans to the elevator.
The profit from the 25 acre soybean crop harvested in 2009 is $14,112.53! Praise be to God! Salem's Administrative Council approved the donation of these monies to the following projects: $10,286.00 went towards Gambia Gamhort and $3,826.00 went towards Zambia Zambezi. The project in Gambia utilizes micro-gardening technology for healthy vegetable production. The project in Zambia includes crop diversification to decrease dependence on vulnerable staple. For more information about these projects, visit www.foodsresourcebank.org and click on Overseas Programs. Thank you for your donations to this project! It's A-Maizing!
